Ancient Sound Healers

Pythagoras

“Each celestial body, in fact each and every atom, produces a particular sound on account of its movement, its rhythm or vibration. All these sounds and vibrations form a universal harmony in which each element, while having its own function and character, contributes to the whole.” –Pythagoras (569-475 BC)

Cochlea of the Human Ear

Cochlea of the Human Ear

The Greek philosopher’s followers defined a golden section proportion, related angles and spirals which became the basis of western music, architecture and natural science. Regularly divided, the Pythagorean golden section produces a musical scale and it is the basic design of the same cochlear spiral found in the human ear.  The Pythagoreans also discovered this same curve in seashells, plants and flowers.  [from Julia Hamilton, www.wjhamilton.com/music_in_proportion.htm]

“Pythagoras based musical education on certain melodies and rhythms that exercised a healing, a purifying influence on the human actions and passions, restoring ‘Pristine Harmony’ of the soul’s faculties. He applied the same means to the curing of diseases of both body and mind.” –Porphyry (233-309 AD), second generation disciple of Pythagoras
